Proton VPN review 2026
If you want a VPN you can defend in a sentence, Proton is the default on this list.
From $4/mo · Plus on a longer term. Free plan exists and is actually usable.
Best for: Privacy, beginners, people who already use Proton Mail

- ~$4/mo on a term

- No-logs, audited

- Streaming is not the #1 feature
Buy if You want a VPN from a company that already does encrypted mail, not a deal-site brand.
Skip if You only care that US Netflix works tonight. Take NordVPN.
Proton VPN is the row for people who are tired of VPN ads. The company is known for Mail. The free tier has real servers. Audits exist. That is why it is first: most buyers need trust more than a 10 Gbps screenshot.
You still pay more on a month-to-month Plus plan than Mullvad’s flat fee. Streaming is better than it was and worse than Nord. Buy Proton for the company. Buy Nord for the living room.
Pros
- Serious privacy company
- Free plan that is not bait-only
- Same account as Proton Mail
Cons
- Streaming catalogs lag the big consumer VPNs
- Plus pricing still likes a long term
Proton VPN FAQ
Is Proton VPN good for Netflix?
Often, not always. If streaming is the only job, NordVPN or ExpressVPN is the better badge.
Is the free plan enough?
For travel Wi-Fi and light use, yes. For all-day streaming and every country, pay.
