Best ecommerce platform in 2026, ranked

Five ways to take a card payment. Shopify is a shop. Wix is a website that can check out. Do not mix them up.

If the business is the store, start at Shopify. If you already bought Hostinger and just need a cart on WordPress, Ecwid. Some buttons are affiliate links.

We scored time to first order, the real monthly plus apps, and who should skip. We did not run a conversion-rate lab.

Best ecommerce platform 2026: the ranking

Filter by the job, then open a review for the full argument. Scores are editorial, 1–10 — they match the badge, not a vendor lab.

1
Best for most shops

Shopify

The shop operating system. Themes, apps, checkout, a monthly floor that is not $0.

If the store is the point of the purchase, Shopify is still the default in 2026.

From
$29/mo Basic
Checkout
Shopify-hosted
Apps
Huge, easy to overspend
Catch
Rent + app tax

Why it ranks

  • Checkout and apps are the ecosystem
  • You will find a tutorial for anything
  • Payments are a solved path

Watch out

  • Monthly plus apps is the real price
  • Leaving later is a project

Buy if Selling is the company and you do not want to be the sysadmin.

Skip if Three products on a brochure. Wix, Squarespace, or Ecwid on the host you already pay for.

2
Best bigger catalog

BigCommerce

More included commerce features, less app nickel-and-diming, a heavier start.

BigCommerce is the grown-up catalog. Worth it when Shopify’s app page is the business model.

From
$29/mo+
Included
More native commerce
Feel
Less consumer-y than Shopify
Catch
Themes and talent are thinner

Why it ranks

  • Built-in features Shopify sells as apps
  • Serious catalog tools
  • Checkout flexibility

Watch out

  • Smaller theme/app universe
  • Onboarding is drier

Buy if You already know you will outgrow Shopify’s app store mentally, not just in GMV.

Skip if First shop, first theme, first Friday. Shopify is faster.

3
Best site that also sells

Squarespace

Beautiful pages first. Commerce second. Fine until you are a retailer.

Squarespace is a gorgeous website that can check out. Do not ask it to be a warehouse.

Commerce
Good, not Shopify
Catch
You will outgrow it if SKUs explode

Why it ranks

  • Templates still win
  • Design without a designer
  • Commerce is enough for a line

Watch out

  • Not a retailer OS
  • Locked-in look if you leave

Buy if The brand site matters more than the 200th product variant.

Skip if You are building a catalog business. Shopify or BigCommerce.

4
Best cheap combo site

Wix

Everything in one builder. Fast to a page. Easy to build a labyrinth.

Wix gets a site-and-cart live this week. It is not where you want to live at SKU 500.

From
~$17/mo
Builder
Very flexible
Commerce
Built-in
Catch
Performance and lock-in

Why it ranks

  • One builder for almost every widget
  • Cheap combo vs Shopify+theme
  • Huge template pile

Watch out

  • Easy to make a slow page
  • Export is not a story you want

Buy if You want one login for the site, blog, and tiny store today.

Skip if You care about clean markup, speed, or leaving later.

5
Best add-a-cart

Ecwid

Put a store on the site you already host. Free rung exists. Ceiling is not Shopify.

Ecwid is the cart plugin grown up. Perfect after a hosting purchase. Wrong as a brand platform.

From
Free tier
Lives on
Your existing site
Best for
Add a cart, not a new stack
Catch
You still own hosting problems

Why it ranks

  • Does not replace your site
  • Free to try
  • Works on WordPress and elsewhere

Watch out

  • Two systems to debug
  • Not a full retailer OS

Buy if You already paid Hostinger and you refuse a second landlord.

Skip if The store is the company. Shopify is less glue.

Best ecommerce platform by job, not by logo

A $29 Shopify plan and a Wix combo site are not substitutes.

Best for a real store

Shopify. BigCommerce when the catalog and B2B features outgrow the Shopify app tax.

Best if the marketing site is the point

Squarespace or Wix. Pretty pages, a cart bolted on. Fine until SKUs explode.

Best if you already have hosting

Ecwid (or WooCommerce, which is not on this paid-platform list). Do not pay Shopify just to avoid WordPress.

Ecommerce prices (2026)

Public starting prices. Annual billing, seats, and fees all move the real cost. Confirm on the provider site.

Ecwid Embeddable cart $0/mo Existing WordPress/Hostinger sites that only need a cart 7.6

How we ranked platforms

Time to first paid order, app-tax honesty, and whether you can leave with your customers.

First order

Can a non-developer sell something this week.

The real bill

Plan + theme + apps + payment fees.

Exit

Can you export products and customers when the rent goes up.

Ecommerce FAQ

Is Shopify the best ecommerce platform?

For a store that is the business, yes — #1 here. Not if you only needed a brochure with three SKUs on Hostinger.

Shopify vs WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is software on your host. Shopify is a landlord. Woo is cheaper until you count plugins and your time. It is not on this five because it is a hosting decision.

Do you get paid if I click?

Some links, yes. Disclosure is public. Rank order is not for sale.
